The Creativity Crisis: Why Scores Are Declining

The phrase "creativity crisis" comes from a specific, well-documented claim, not a vague cultural anxiety. In 2011, creativity researcher Kyung Hee Kim published a meta-analysis in Creativity Research Journal examining nearly 273,000 scores on the Torrance Tests of Creative Thinking (TTCT), collected across five norming periods between 1966 and 2008. Her finding: creative thinking scores rose steadily for decades, then began declining somewhere around 1990 — even as IQ scores over the same period kept climbing.

Newsweek picked up the story that same year in a widely shared cover feature by Po Bronson and Ashley Merryman, titled, fittingly, "The Creativity Crisis." The phrase stuck. It's since become shorthand for the idea that American schooling, parenting, or culture is quietly eroding a skill that matters more than test scores suggest.

What gets left out of most retellings is that Kim's finding has since been directly challenged by other researchers using a larger dataset — and the fight over whether a creativity crisis is even real tells you something more useful than either side's headline conclusion.

What Kim's 2011 Study Actually Found

The Torrance Tests, developed by E. Paul Torrance in 1966, measure creative thinking along four dimensions: fluency (how many ideas), flexibility (how many distinct categories they span), originality (how unusual they are), and elaboration (how developed each idea is). The test has been renormed five times to keep pace with generational changes in scoring baselines.

Kim's analysis of the accumulated normative data found that scores held steady or declined starting around sixth grade, and that the drop became measurable across nearly all age groups after 1990. The decline showed up most clearly in originality and in what Torrance called "fantasy" — the capacity to generate imaginative, non-obvious responses rather than safe, expected ones. Kim's central claim wasn't just that scores dipped, but that the dip was persistent and getting worse the more recent the normed cohort.

The Direct Challenge to the "Crisis"

In 2021, Baptiste Barbot and Sameh Said-Metwaly published a critical re-analysis in the Journal of Creative Behavior — "Is There Really a Creativity Crisis? A Critical Review and Meta-Analytic Re-Appraisal" — using a larger sample of more than 330,000 participants across the same TTCT norming editions Kim had studied. Their conclusion directly contradicted hers: once methodological issues in the original analysis were corrected, they found no consistent evidence of a generational decline in creativity at all.

Their critique centered on how Kim's analysis handled scoring changes across norming editions, sample composition differences between cohorts, and statistical choices in how "decline" was defined. This isn't a case of one side having data and the other having opinions — both papers are meta-analyses built on the same underlying test. They disagree about what the numbers mean.

That disagreement is worth sitting with rather than resolving artificially. Score trends over multiple renormings of a single test, gathered from different schools and regions over five decades, are genuinely hard to interpret cleanly. Anyone citing "the creativity crisis" as a settled fact is skipping a live scientific argument.

Why the Decline Hypothesis Was Plausible Anyway

Even without settling whether the aggregate numbers show a true decline, researchers have proposed specific mechanisms that would produce one if it exists. Psychologist Peter Gray has documented a steep, well-measured drop in children's unsupervised free play since the 1950s, and has argued directly that this decline tracks with reduced opportunities to practice the kind of open-ended, self-directed problem solving that builds creative thinking. Standardized-testing pressure in schools has also been proposed as a mechanism: curricula built around single correct answers reward convergent thinking and provide little structured practice in the divergent, evaluation-free idea generation that the TTCT measures.

Neither of these mechanisms requires the aggregate score data to show a clean decline to be worth taking seriously. They're claims about what happens to creative thinking capacity when practice opportunities shrink — a separate question from whether Kim's specific dataset proves it happened at a population level.

Why This Debate Matters More Than the Headline

Here's what both sides of the "creativity crisis" argument agree on, and it's the more important finding: creative thinking is measurable, and childhood scores on tests like the TTCT predict adult outcomes. Follow-up studies that tracked Torrance's original test-takers across 40 and then 50 years found that childhood fluency and originality scores predicted adult creative achievement — patents, publications, artistic output, leadership roles — about as well as or better than childhood IQ did. That predictive relationship isn't in dispute the way the decline is.

Put those two facts together and the practical takeaway isn't "creativity is disappearing, panic." It's that creative thinking behaves like a trainable skill with measurable, consequential variation between individuals — which means the amount of deliberate practice you get (or don't get) plausibly matters regardless of whether the population-wide average is falling. How to Train Against the Decline, Real or Not

Whether or not the aggregate numbers show a true crisis, the mechanisms researchers point to — less unstructured play, less tolerance for open-ended problems, more environments that reward one right answer — are ones you can counteract directly in your own practice.

Rebuild unstructured generation time. Peter Gray's play research and Torrance's own scoring criteria point to the same underlying capacity: producing ideas without immediate evaluation. The divergent thinking exercise is a direct, timed version of exactly that — generate first, judge later.

Practice elaboration deliberately. Of the four TTCT dimensions, elaboration is the one most degraded by habits like skimming and multitasking. Taking one idea and developing it in specific, sensory detail — rather than moving on to the next one — is a distinct skill from generating lots of ideas, and it's rarely practiced on purpose.

Treat creativity training like Kim treats the data: with specifics, not vibes. General encouragement to "be more creative" doesn't do anything measurable.
