Travel and Creativity: How Cultural Exposure Boosts Ideas

Travel and creativity are linked by more than a postcard cliché about "broadening your horizons." In 2009, researchers at Northwestern's Kellogg School and INSEAD found that time spent living abroad predicted performance on a classic test of creative insight — but the effect only appeared for people who had actively adapted to the foreign culture, not simply visited it. That distinction, between engagement and mere exposure, turns out to be most of the story.

The instinct to treat travel as inherently creativity-boosting is common and mostly wrong. What the research actually shows is narrower, more mechanistic, and more useful: specific kinds of cross-cultural engagement change how flexibly you connect ideas, and tourism alone rarely produces that change.

What the Duncker Candle Problem Study Actually Found

William Maddux and Adam Galinsky ran five studies for their 2009 paper in the Journal of Personality and Social Psychology, the most cited involving MBA students at INSEAD in France. Participants attempted the Duncker candle problem — the classic insight task where you're given a candle, a box of tacks, and a book of matches, and asked to attach the candle to a wall so it won't drip wax on the table below. The solution requires seeing the tack box itself as a candleholder rather than as a mere container, and it resists direct effort in a way that reveals real change in someone's associative range. Maddux and Galinsky found that the more students had adapted to a foreign culture during time abroad — adjusting behavior, learning local norms, forming relationships — the more likely they were to solve it. Simply having lived in another country wasn't enough on its own. Adaptation was the variable that mattered.

Galinsky described the underlying process as a kind of psychological transformation: living abroad and successfully adjusting to it appears to loosen the mental structures that keep ideas filed in their usual categories. That connects directly to functional fixedness — the tendency to see an object or concept only in terms of its typical use. Adapting to unfamiliar norms repeatedly demonstrates that "typical" is arbitrary, and that lesson seems to generalize beyond the specific cultural context where it was learned.

Engagement, Not Exposure

Angela Leung, Maddux, Galinsky, and Chi-yue Chiu extended this in a 2008 American Psychologist paper that is now the standard reference on the mechanism: multicultural experience enhances creativity, but only under specific conditions. Their review found that the extent of multicultural engagement — not mere exposure to a foreign environment — predicted gains on insight problems, remote-association tasks, and idea generation. People who had processed and integrated a foreign culture's norms showed more flexible retrieval of unconventional knowledge and were more willing to recruit ideas from unfamiliar domains into their thinking. People who had simply been physically present in a foreign country without engaging with it showed none of this.

This has an obvious and slightly deflating implication: a week at an all-inclusive resort isn't what the research describes. The mechanism requires actually grappling with a different way of organizing daily life — different social norms, different assumptions about time, hierarchy, or communication — long enough that some of it has to be resolved rather than simply observed. Cognitive flexibility is the underlying capacity being trained, and like any trained capacity, it responds to real friction, not passive exposure.

The Fashion House Study: Breadth, Depth, and Distance

A 2015 Academy of Management Journal study by Frédéric Godart, Maddux, Andrew Shipilov, and Galinsky took the question out of the lab and into industry. The researchers analyzed 11 years of fashion collections from major houses, cross-referencing each creative director's history of working abroad against expert ratings of how creative critics judged their collections to be. Three dimensions of foreign experience predicted collection creativity: the breadth of countries a director had worked in, the depth of time spent in each, and the cultural distance between those countries and the director's home culture.

The finding that matters most for anyone who isn't running a fashion house: breadth and cultural distance did real work beyond raw time abroad. A director who had worked briefly across several culturally distant countries showed stronger associated creative gains than one who had spent the same total time in a single, culturally similar location. This tracks the engagement finding above — distinct cultural systems force more renegotiation of assumptions than a long stay in one familiar-enough environment, where adaptation happens once and then plateaus.

Why This Works: Disrupted Scripts, Not Inspiration

The mechanism proposed across this research isn't inspiration in the romantic sense — new sights sparking new ideas. It's more structural. Living inside a different cultural script disrupts the assumption, usually invisible, that the way your home culture does things is simply the way things are done. Questioning assumptions is a discipline most people have to practice deliberately; cross-cultural adaptation imposes it involuntarily, because the assumptions keep failing to predict what happens next.

Leung and colleagues describe this as building conceptual bridges — associative links between ideas or practices from different cultural systems that wouldn't otherwise connect. Once someone has personally experienced two valid but incompatible ways of solving the same problem — queuing norms, negotiation styles, concepts of punctuality — the mind has direct evidence that more than one workable solution exists for a given constraint. That's a specific, transferable habit of thought, not a vague sense of having been inspired by a trip.

How to Get the Benefit Without Relocating

Living abroad for months or years isn't accessible to everyone on a useful timeline, but the research suggests the effective ingredient scales down further than "move to another country."

Engage rather than observe. If you do travel, the research is specific about what matters: navigating daily logistics in the local language when possible, eating what's actually eaten rather than what's marketed to tourists, and spending time in situations where you have to adjust your own behavior rather than watch someone else's. A week doing this produces more of the effect than a month of guided tours.

Recall counts, not just fresh experience. Leung's team found that having people vividly recall and write about a past multicultural adaptation experience, before a creativity task, improved their performance on insight and idea-generation measures compared with recalling a same-culture experience. If you've already lived through genuine cultural adaptation, deliberately revisiting that memory before a difficult creative problem appears to reactivate some of the same flexibility.

Look for cultural distance locally. Godart's finding on distance suggests that engaging with a culturally distant community close to home — through language exchange, immigrant-owned businesses, or cultural events outside your own background — may do more than a trip to a country that operates similarly to your own.

Pair it with a structured problem. The creativity gains in these studies show up on tasks that require reorganizing existing knowledge — insight problems, analogical reasoning, remote associations — rather than raw idea volume. If you want cross-cultural experience to pay off in your work, bring an unsolved, well-defined problem into the experience rather than hoping inspiration arrives generically.

None of this argues against travel for its own sake. It argues against the assumption that exposure alone does the work. The research consistently isolates adaptation — the friction of actually having to solve problems inside an unfamiliar system — as the active ingredient, and that friction is available in smaller doses than a plane ticket to another continent.
